Collections Project Assistant, Full Time

(Temporary Position)

The Collections Project Assistant will support the strategic initiative to build a new collections storage facility and move the museum collections.

The Collections Project Assistant is responsible for assisting with a variety of tasks to prepare collections to be moved to a new collections storage facility. This will include inventorying, condition reporting, updating digital catalog records, research, documentary photography and packing of the Ohio History Connection's natural history specimens, three-dimensional historical objects and archaeological artifacts. This position will also be involved in the creation of catalog data utilizing both spreadsheets and OHC's collection database to improve intellectual and physical control of collections. The positions will work in offices, storage areas and exhibit areas. The position will work closely with archivists, librarians, registrars and curators.

Positions are available in both Wilberforce, Ohio, at the National Afro American Museum and Cultural Center and at the current collections storage facility in Columbus, Ohio. This will be a temporary assignment from January 2022 through May 2023.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Improve the physical control of collections through barcoding, labeling and tracking collection data.
  • Contribute to growing our digital collections database, and use the database to complete collection processes related to preparation of collections for move.
  • Photograph collections, edit images and attach images to catalog records.
  • Assess and document conditions of collection objects.
  • Clean objects as needed following standards taught during initial employment training.

Education and Experience

Minimum of two years of experience working with natural history specimens, three-dimensional historical objects, and/or archaeological artifacts in a museum setting. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to multi-task and experience in working with data in spreadsheets.

  • Position: Full-time, temporary assignment (approximately 18 months - Jan 2022 to May 2023)
