Newark Earthworks Interpretive Intern

Duration of Internship: SUMMER 2022 (May through September)

Schedule: 32 hours per week, must work weekends

Pay Rate: $14.00hr

The Newark Earthworks Interpretive Internship will support the Cultural Resources Division/Historic Sites and Museums Department on specific projects related to the interpretation of Newark Earthworks, including but not limited to its place in the World Heritage Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks sites. This internship will focus on the engagement and connection of diverse audiences and communities to the site by participating in mentorship, American Indian policy compliance, and primary (K-12) education, and providing event support.

Internship is open to: Undergraduate college juniors or seniors or graduate students pursuing degrees in: Natural History, Public History, Interpretation, or other closely related academic program

Internship Learning Objectives

  • Build knowledge of interpretive foundations, practices, techniques including researching and selecting content for program development; developing age- and audience appropriate thematic messaging; and writing, editing, and delivering content
  • Learn and demonstrate the differences between formal and informal interpretation
  • Build skills for communicating with audiences with consideration to the principles of diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
  • Write objectives and outcomes for interpretive tours and programs
  • Identify and/or create hands-on, relevant props that strengthen messaging

Essential Duties and Responsibilities during Internship

  • Support all aspects of marketing and public relations in order to advance a project, programming, and marketing goals
  • Manage calendar of on-site tours, including public, private and educational
  • Research similarities and differences between Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks and produce a poster
  • Develop first draft K-12 educational tours that provide support to teachers fulfilling Ohio's Academic Content Standards
  • Conduct guided tours of Great Circle for general public, private tours and K-12 schools
  • Assist with planning and presentation of Octagon Open Houses
  • Create surveys and summarize survey results by presentation/series
  • Provide post-event reports with participation count and collection of questions and comments
  • Participate in meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Demonstrated flexibility in handling multiple assignments and tasks; ability to prioritize duties and communicate on progress
  • Open to learning and engaging in skills development and practice
  • Ability to address problems and resolve conflicts with empathy and mindfulness Comfort using technology including computers, related applications, and video conferencing (i.e., Zoom, Teams)

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Constant work in outdoor weather conditions while onsite. Ability to move/traverse over paved and unpaved terrain in both outdoor and indoor areas including office and museum settings. Frequent communication with other interns and colleagues including conversing with visitors and conveying information about the historical site(s). Constant positioning of self to operate on computer including communicating, conversing, and exchanging information.
