Under the direction of the NAAMCC curatorial staff, the intern will assist with research, writing, interpretation, installation, deinstallation, and other aspects of curatorial and historical exhibit design.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Training Opportunities:

  • Locate and consult both secondary and primary sources while performing in-depth research on collections objects, historical events, people, places, and themes.
  • Create catalog lists in PastPerfect compiling records around a particular theme or exhibit concept.
  • Properly handle and transport objects from collections storage areas to display areas, which may include packing objects for safe transport in a traveling exhibit.
  • Learn about different types of display furniture and how to safely and effectively display objects within an exhibit.
  • Learn different styles of exhibit writing and design, participate in the creation of one or more of the following: panel text, exhibit labels, panel design, graphics, etc.
  • Learn about visitor flow and participate in the creation of exhibit design elevations and floor plan layout.
  • Assist with the research, selection, and acquisition of exhibit related materials including but not limited to graphic substrate, stanchions, pedestals, plexiglass bonnets, furniture, etc.
  • Create social media posts promoting aspects of selected exhibits and learn how to target specific audiences within these posts.


  • Education and/or Experience: Currently enrolled in or recently completed an accredited African American studies, museum studies, public history, history, art history, fine art, archaeology, or other related program. Familiarity with registration methods, museum collections management, and artifact handling practices required. Prior experience with artifact care preferred.
  • Familiarity with QuadraStar (or other collections management database experience), Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator preferred.
  • Reasoning Ability: Requires ability to research the history and provenance of permanent collection objects and objects on loan, and make reasoned judgments about the significance of those objects.
