Archives Intern


Under the direction of the NAAMCC Archivist, the intern will assist with all aspects of archives collections management including the documentation, management, movement, and care of the permanent archives collections and loan materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Highlight archives collections through NAAMCC social media accounts including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube
  • Taking weekly measurements of environment factors in storage rooms and exhibition areas
  • Processing new acquisitions, found-in-collections, and delayed processing collections: including researching, scanning, marking, describing, preventative care, housing, and storing
  • Record reconciliation
  • Contribute to the revision and implementation of archives collections forms and procedures used by the Collections Department
  • Assist in updating the collections database formatting and functionality
  • Assist in implementing best practices in archives collection storage areas by re-housing and inventorying permanent collection objects
  • Assist in public research requests, donor/vendor relations, and newsletter articles
  • Assist with exhibition prep, installation, de-installation, and condition reporting
  • Assist with unpacking, packing, and shipping of loaned objects
  • Assist and advise other interns and volunteers as needed
  • Other duties as needed including clerical and maintenance duties


  • Education and/or Experience: Currently enrolled in or recently completed an accredited African American studies, IMLS, museum studies, public history, history, art history, fine art, archaeology, or other related program. Familiarity with archival processing and registration methods required.
  • Language Skills: The ability to learn and communicate by written and oral instructions.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel and familiarity with Microsoft Access are required. Familiarity with QuadraStar (or other collections management database experience), Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator preferred.
  • Reasoning Ability: Requires ability to research the history and provenance of archival collections and loaned collections and make reasoned judgments about management and care of those collections.
